THE WAR ON WIMMIN
WAR AND WIMMIN: MAIN PAGE
WHAT WARS DO TO WIMMIN
Women and the "War on Terrorism"Sunera Thobani, a Canadian professor, criticized the American war effort in a speech and raised such a firestorm of controversy that she was almost charged with a hate crime. "War Frenzy" is Sunera Thobani's reply to the criticism of her speech, in which she outlines how militarism and war result in a culture of violence and oppression of women not only in Third World Countries, but in the Western world as well. Afghani Wimmin:
According the the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA):
A common argument made in support of the American-led War on Terror in Afghanistan is that it has helped free that country of an oppressive, fundamentalist regime. However, the US remains a staunch supporter of Saudi Arabia, despite the fact that country has institutionalized a very conservative and intensely mysogynist version of Islam. The US is also reponsible for helping give rise to the Taliban in the first place through its support of the mujaheddin in the 1980's. It seems that Western commitment to feminism in the Middle East may be a "colonial feminism: which does little to help women regain their rights. source
"Even if a greater measure of freedom were to be won, would that make the war right? When it comes to human rights, the question is whether anything can be worse than war. At what point does war become the best option? To say that the war may be good for Afghan women is almost to say that it is better for them to die in the bombing, cold or starvation than to live under the Taliban. The West has decided that death is preferable to slavery -- for Afghan women. This would be a truly heroic decision if Western lives, not those of Afghan women, were in the balance." source
